IC Information
Name: Naoto Fuyumine
Canon: DOGS: Bullets & Carnage
Gender: Female
Age: Appears early 20s | amnesia makes her real age unknown
History: Naoto’s memories of what happened to her before being rescued by Fuyumine were lost with the exception of seeing her presumed parents and attacker standing over her sliced open body. He named her Naoto after a former colleague when she was unable to remember her own name. Years pass under Fuymine’s care with Naoto under the false belief he was her parents killer. He told her that he had been the one to kill her parents to displace her hatred on him and have reason to continue living. The lie was believed and she trained alongside him intent on killing him one day to avenge her parents and lost past.
She picked up quick and after awhile Magato another one of Fuyumine’s took interest. Attacking from behind, he cut her shirt open to reveal her X scar across the center of her chest and spoke crude of it. Before anything more can occur, Fuyumine stepped in with Magato ready to return attack. It left Naoto shaken and Fuyumine removed his coat giving it to her. She noticed then for the second time Fuyumine looked sorrowful since living with him.
More time passes and upon returning from a job she encountered Magato holding Fuyumine’s sword and his body torn apart against the wall. In a burst of anger she lashed out at him proclaiming she had always hated him. Already worn out by fighting Fuyumine, Magato was defeated and parted information about Naoto’s parents true killer, the other ‘Naoto’. He then retreats to die on his own terms leaving Naoto in her thoughts, Fuyumine’s coat and sword taken after leaving with a tearful goodbye and questioning why he took her in.
An unknown amount of time again passed setting up the series proper. The search for her parents true killer continued going from informant to informant until learning from an unsuccessful meetings there was an informant who knew about the below where the other ‘Naoto’ was according to Magato’s parting information. She was told to that two men, a white hair and eye patch, were also looking for information about the below.
She found the mentioned informant, a priest who went the name of Bishop. Before she was able to ask much, a group of men enter the church to kidnap Nill a genetically modified mute girl with wings. Without hesitation, Naoto took to defending the girl putting down at the kidnappers.
A conversation on the whereabouts of below turned into a dead end, but her second lead happened to walk in as she was leaving. She drilled for information from Heine, but received none. She then went to Liza a gang leader with Heine and Badou to find out more after being told she might know. There she learned more about Fuyumine and how he went about saving children from being kidnapped. Her understanding of him changed and from there on she had a sense of respect for him.
Afterward she joined the duo on a job of Liza’s that went astray. Twins calling Heine their brother attack and Naoto joined in hearing they recognized her sword. The fight was cut short, the twins escaping leaving Naoto with more questions and a single name, Fruhling. An explosion rocked the city soon after drawing her and Heine to the source, Naoto feeling distressed and coming to pass out upon seeing Fruhling’s eyes in a passing train cart.
Awaking later, she discovered Bishop had left when he had information he had not parted before. Taking Nill along with them, Naoto and Heine go to Liza’s to drop her off and cross Badou’s path in his own search for answers. When there Naoto was taken aside for Liza’s hobby of dresses, but again an explosion rocked the city as soldiers in black begin attacking at random.
Sword in hand, she joined the fight with Liza’s people. Heine reappeared telling them whom they were fighting were not normal and later consoles Naoto on her inability to kill by explaining they were not alive or dead. Her resolve was rekindled and with her new bonds formed, took to heart to protect those she cared for and toss aside her quest for revenge.
The assault ended with the soldiers exploding and Giovanni Heine’s brother escaped leaving Heine shaken before being settled by a smack from Naoto. Afterward a funeral was held for those lost and Heine went into detail about his past deeper than he had prior with Badou, Nill, and Naoto earlier. At the end of story he made claim he could not protect anyone and Naoto called him out on it fueled by her own protective streak. Talk was cut short by Magato appearing, causing chaos, and telling Naoto her sword was unique.
Once calmed, Magato took Naoto and Heine with promise of information to a train tunnel. There Naoto met Fruhling for the first time since losing her parents. Emotion took control and a fight broke out, Fruhling parting after the Mayor’s forces appear telling Naoto she was a spare. Shaken, she and Heine were taken in by the Mayor’s forces for questioning. They return to the church only to have their moment of peace disturbed by the twins. Unarmed, they stick around playing with Nill while Heine ventured off. A girl later entered the church as the twin’s mother and by touch took control of Naoto.
Unable to control her body, she destroyed the church’s interior until Heine returned after fighting with Magato again. They fight, Heine pinning her while stabbed to return Naoto to control. She did not watching in horror as she sank her blade through him. Badou by chance returned as well removing the two followed by Bishop.
She returned to Magato for more answers and while fighting him learns about her origin and that Heine had left her in going underground. Angered, she rushed to the church finding Bishop well and able to see. Following him deeper into the underground and fending off one of the twins, they cross one of Einstrzen’s clones where the truth about Naoto was exposed. She was an intended vessel for Einstruzen and Bishop now seeing had to kill her to prevent that from happening. Fruhling also appeared, but before a further fight could ensue the city was rocked and overtaken by massive pipe works.
After their meeting, Naoto now knew of her past as an experiment. Together with Badou and Mihai, they return to where Heine had entered the deep underground finding him, Giovanni, and Einsturzen was waiting. Surrounded by troops, Heine jumped between them over taken by his spine and Naoto ready with blade to put him down.
Personality:
"...if I lose faith...I can't protect anything."
Naoto has a befitting name with its meaning alluding to her personality. Even within the context of canon it is pointed out how her name reflects her personality and the name’s different meanings. Translated it becomes ‘straight blade’ or ‘honest blade’ and for being name given to her, it matches her well. She is thought of as a good and honest person among the evil and carnage of the underground. Various characters throughout the series make remarks about her intrinsic kindness and the faults that come with it.
One such fault is one of her own doing, her refusal to kill. It’s a trait that first shows up in the prequel where even in her rage she was unable to kill Magato for killing Fuyumine. In the series main it is pointed out by Heine in a roundabout manner during their fight with the twins. She jumps to the rescue of one of the twins under the false belief Heine was killing her only to discover those bearing ‘collars’ were not easy to kill off. It is addressed again more direct during the first assault from Einstruzen’s forces where Heine ask, “You’ve never cut someone deep enough to kill, have you?”, and proceeds to console her that the enemies they are fighting arre not alive or dead to being with. In her fight with Magato later she goes out of her way to not give a killing blow and he admits he gave her openings to his vital organs.
She is driven, focused to a fine point, and straight and narrow like a sword. However this sword is double sided. Her persistence in getting answers bleeds right over into stubbornness, but she gets results when answers are within reach. Her focus can become so pointed that everything is tossed aside turning her extreme focus into a flaw, the world tuned out except for one point of interest. Between the events of the prequel and main series it is implied she has been on the hunt for answers to the information Magato left her in parting, most of all who really killed her assumed parents and left her for dead.
This persistence in search for answers and revenge comes to a halt when her motives change to wanting to protect those she holds dear. Learning the truth of her origin and of the original 'Naoto' does not dissuade her from her stance on protecting, she effectively doubles down since protecting and revenge become almost one in the same with whom she is fighting against. She takes her desire to protect so adamant that she will kill, including herself in the event she lost control of her body just to protect people. She is still visibly shaken by taking life even out of protecting others as seen with her distress during the first assault as mentioned above. Being told they she is fight were not living does not deter the distress, but she continues to fight and kill in order to protect.
Naoto tends to carry subdued expressions giving off a vibe of cool headedness. This calm exterior shatters fast when important matters are brought to the forefront or irked just right. When the exterior does fall, there is a burst of emotions she unable to keep bottled up. Key events in the series have shaken her to the core pulling out rage, sorrow, and shock. She does a poor job dealing with strong emotions at times like these pulling into herself in silence or spacing out in though. The mere mention of Fruhling upsets her and the sight destroys any calm composure she is holding, enough so it is brought up how unlike her it is to lose her cool and let emotions take control.
It takes personal blows for it to surface, but it's hard to miss when her temper flares. Minor annoyances get a reaction, though not to a violent degree. She gets frustrated and nonverbally shows her distaste about it over vocally pointing out the origin of her frustrations. Anger stands out as the emotion she has the most trouble with. Barring appearances of Fruhling and Magato, it takes time and blows for her temper to flare up.
The things that annoy her earn overreactions. She either grows frustrated violent at annoyances depending on whom and what is annoying her. The latter has decreased in appearances bar Magato and she has taken to a less violent reaction of pointing out what is annoying her other taking it out. When Heine draws comparisons between them, she draws a knife on him and is adamant they are not alike at a point in canon she is still revenge driven and cold. Mentions of her nonexistent dating life and frequent sexual remarks by Magato fluster her a great deal, although his presence alone is enough to put her on edge. In contrast she remains steady and business like during a skirmish with Magato and while drilling for information from informants via finger removal.
In comparison to the rest of the main cast, Naoto is nicer in a similarly subdued manner as her expressions. Her manner of speaking is polite without going into regal levels. Instead of words, it is how she speaks rather than what she says. That is not to imply she does not say please or thank you, but she is not loose with them either. More often than words she gives off gestures like bows and curt nods intended as politeness and it is likely that in her time with Fuyumine she did not learn how to act polite by normal means. She does not use her words much as she uses her actions to show politeness.
She is honest with people around her, sometimes brutal or calling them out on lies they are telling themselves. One such incident is after Heine speaks about his past and goes on to claim he cannot protect anyone. Naoto in turn calls him out on it saying he did during the assault, but the conversation is cut short before she can say more. The only time she is not honest is when it is about her wellbeing, something she puts aside thinking of the wellbeing of others and lying to them to maintain it. To go against her integrity shows her devotion to protecting those she cares for in emotional and physical terms.
In the last twenty plus chapters she has taken a beating on her emotional and mental fortitude after changing her purpose from revenge to protection. The time span within these chapters appears short, a week if not days, putting a lot of strain on her. She learns in rapid secession she never had any parents and is cloned spare for Fruhling followed by harder blows that she is the intended vessel for Einsturzen and that she can have her body taken over at anytime. The most devastating hit comes when she does lose control of her body and witnesses it attempting to kill Heine leading later to a pact between them in the event one or the other loses control to kill them off.
Naoto stays true to her name in honesty and acting forthright. It comes with its faults of being too blunt and having a persistence that hinders her when her focus becomes too narrowed in, but over all she is a good person given a terrible hand in a in a city wrought with chaos. Still she bares her fangs and fights for what she believes is right even if it is down to her last breath.
Powers/Abilities: She has no identifying marks to separate her from normal people bar her scar, however she capable of super human feats because her genetic experiment/clone background.
Memory & Application: She's a fast learner having picked up the blade under Fuyumine's supervision at the apparent age of 12 and learning it well into a short time span. She herself is unaware how well she can learn and apply, but it is one of the defining traits of her progenitors whom she is cloned from. It's application has been for the most part in wielding a sword and combat, the few things she's attentive of at all times.
Agility & Swordsmanship: From the point her memories began anew, Naoto has been in some shape or form using a blade. Her innate ability to remember and apply things puts her at an advantage in how to handle swords and knifes. The thorns in her side with her talent in sharp objects is she isn't well trained in fighting over sword users at or above her level and her refusal to outright kill at most times.
Tied to her swordsmanship are her reflexes. In a world were guns are the primary weapon, she can stand toe to toe and overtake firearm users. She tends to fight in closed in spaces as most of the underground consist of them, so her actual speed not fast enough to dodge bullets. She can disarm and remove arms all the same since she doesn't a problem with maiming as she does killing.
Keepsakes/Mementos:
Murato Fuyumine's Katana: Heirloom of her mentor and pseudo father figure she acquired after his death at the hands of Magato. The hilt has a decorative piece at the end and the blade itself is black as is its scabbard. It's also the sword used by Fruhling and a number of others use similar looking blades with decorative hilts. Is effective against the Rammsteiner series by 'poisoning' them and hindering their healing factor. Can effectively kill them if it comes in contact with their spine.
Murato Fuyumine's Coat: She doesn't wear if often anymore, but it was at one point her favored coat and worn for a portion of the series until other coat were taken up. Presumably she cherishes enough to put it away once conflicts began being that it was present during a traumatic point in her life.
Sewing kit: For the attempts of Nill to resew torn clothing and not doing well. Bonding item
Tattered Tailored Dress: Gift of Liza's, ruined in fight with Heine.A memory of their pact, him, and her loss of control.
Knives: A secondary weapon she tends to have on hand in multitudes wherever she can hide or store them. Seen using a jackknife, dagger, throwing knives, and at one point a karambits.
Scarf: Appears to have no significance other than her favoring them.
Her scar: While not a traditional memento, it's very important to her. She is self conscious of how it looks painful more than the scar’s appearance and often derails worry about it by saying it’s fine.
Sample: The blunt force of the concrete wall meeting her falling shoulder didn’t faze her. Dull aching throbs at points of impact and sharp stinging pain where something tore into her flesh off put any hard hits. Naoto tightened her bite and the hold on her katana dragging another few steps using the wall as a prop smearing a thin trail of dark red behind her.
She wasn’t going to stop fighting, not so long she was able to fight. Peeling herself off the wall threw her into a stagger. It’s corrected, but not as quick as it should have been. All her wounds were accumulating big and small. The loss of blood and the exertion past what was possible for normal humans was wreaking havoc on her body and control over it.
“Not yet.” The tone didn’t match her voice. The amount of screaming she’d done had slipped her mind, her head shaking to remove the building haze tossing her dark bangs about. A couple of more steps and the wall was met again by her back. The air was stirred putting her into a coughing fit, hands too occupied in holding weapon and her side to stifle them.
Where was everyone? She remembered Mihai and Badou going for cover and the world around her overtaken by a deafening noise. What happened after was faded like some long distant memory and the more she tried to grab hold of it, the more it slipped further away. A nearby explosion brought ringing to her ears seeming to shake the very ground.
She slid down against the wall feeling the concrete grooves grind into her back. Her body slumped forward and she pulled her sword close to her chest. Why was her chest hurting so bad? Why couldn't she remember what happened? Gunfire pulled her attention up from her blade, narrow eyes gazing into the smoke to sharpen the blurry forms moving in it.
What she could see and hear were intense overloading her. Yet it didn’t part the smoke and make clear what happened, it only made the surround area vivid and burned to her memory. Realizing how her sense were pulling in everything around her made her ill.
She knew what that meant. She had that feeling before under the bodies of those who rescued her from the underground labs. It meant she was dying, her body in some last ditch effort recording her dying moments as if it would do any good.
“No-get up.” Her voice cracked. “Get up.” It fell softer and the lull of rest began wrapping itself around her. It wasn’t going to end this way. She was going to get up and keep fighting, not go out like this. She had to keep fighting. The lofty demands of her will weren’t taken by her battered body. It refused to rise, it refused to listen.
Weight took her groundwork on her right shoulder, katana loose in hand and within her field of view. They needed her. Nill needed her. Heine needed her. An order made it down the nerves of her left leg, her booted foot attempting to help lift her. It slid across the floor instead in a disheartening slick noise. The wounds about her torso didn’t hurt anymore. Bit by bit her senses dulled fading her vision and muting the rumbling around her.
She was not going to die like this. Not in a whimper slumped against a wall. Anger gave way to fear. Who was going to protect them? Mihai and Badou were lost in recent memory and Heine was still overtaken by madness. Her legs kicked again as the last of her vision fell into darkness.
Not like this, anything but this. She had to keep fighting she had to keep-
Mindset: Naoto discovering she is dead on top of the rapid fire trauma she has experienced is going to make adapting to Monad difficult. She is already shaken and trying to stabilize herself, but hearing she is dead will act as a final nail in the coffin. Acceptance will not come easy. The death part of things is not what is going to hurt her most as knowing she failed to protect people, or least is under the impression she was unable to by what she remembers.
She'll put on a brave face about thing and try to cope. Monad isn't a believable afterlife to her, but canon doesn't give any insight on what is other than implying the real world views. She won't panic and this being a dream is a bit of a stretch, however it won't take long for her to pick up on things being amiss and why the others aren't there.
Short answer: She isn't going to like dying and is going to never really come to terms with it.
G̶̶l̨͡i̵͢t̷c͝͠h̕é͠s̷̷͡:
Naoto has a weakness for protecting the weak and hates finding herself in the position of being weak. Everything just about dealing with Fruhling, Einstruzen, and to some degree Magato frigtenes or disturbs her. Fruling's eyes in particular since they have put her into shock. Einstruzen about loss of control of her body, hijack it, and for being a monster. Magato can pass the line between weird to creepy, especially his come ons that were overtly sexual in nature.
Losing control, unable to protect, and innocents being harms can also be worked with. Many of those can work with the above big ones. Sexual or romantic overtones bother her, more so the former than later. Her scar is a giant reminder of everything that's happened to her and she makes gestures at times like it hurts near Fruhling or similar underground foes.
Cloning problems including being in a tube, knowing she's a clone, and being thought of as a spare or nothing does a number on her. Weapons depending on context, but bladed ones are more abundant and meaningful in her life than say guns.
Monsters of the genetic made sort and Heine specifically is a hot button issue. In relation are dogs, some of the monsters are werewolf like and a black Doberman is shown in promotional art a lot. Becoming a monster is her worst fear as monsters go and it ties in with losing control.
